About

Theora Balsam was born in New York City to a theatrical family. Her mother Cleone Balsam was a stage actress in New York City and later a set designer for the studios. Her father Warren Balsam also performed in community musical theatre, was a writer for the New York Times and later taught English and Drama in New York City schools. Theora’s additional family members are in the entertainment and publishing business: Martin Balsam (decd.), Joyce Van Patten, Talia Balsam, Adam Balsam, Zoe Balsam-Biggs, and Iris Smyles. During her childhood Theora performed in community theater. When Theora was not appearing on tour, she spent the weekends exploring the Adirondack mountains where her love of local history soared; there she also won local talent contests. While in high school, Theora won a full-time three-year scholarship to “The New Dance Group Studio” located in the Times Square area.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science, Theora moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of film where she was noticed by an agent. After a few years, she had a short stint as an NBC news researcher. It was there that she received on the job training, writing copy, and reading off a teleprompter as a host.
Inspired by her creativity, in 1994, Theora opened up her own business in greeting cards. While featuring her business in New York City’s major trade shows, Theora’s business was headlined in various business magazines. Between hosting, marketing, and acting, Theora was asked to be a guest speaker at local schools providing inspiration to youngsters. She later earned a Master’s degree (cum laude) in education. A passionate advocate for education and art, Theora founded Artistry West Productions, which emphasizes inspirational messages for children. Theora is a volunteer for BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) a signature children’s literacy program of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.
